This is a great thriller by Diane Castle. It begins with Chloe Taylor who is defending her client who lost her husband from cancer. The oil company, Petro Plex, does not offer protective wear for their employees, and they know the substance causes cancer. Chloe is going to court the following day with her key witness, however, he ends up murdered before he can take the stand. Chloe works with Miles who is a great partner. Her boss is Dick, who we consider a jerk, however you may think a little differently at the end of the book. Then we have Nash, the Detective who was going to arrest Chloe at the beginning for breaking and entering and then ended up working together once Nash was informed on what Petro Plex was doing. We discover there was a computer genius who used to work for Petro Plex that has information that could harm or destroy the company. His name is Cameron and he appears to be laid back, you will like all the people in the book including Chloe's dog, Lucy, except you may not care for the higher-ups who are making all the money and are all crooks as well as Chloe's ex-boyfriend They will do anything to protect themselves as well as the company. I loved it when they discussed the BP oil spill since that was close to home for me and the damage caused and how the government tries to cover things up. This is a great action packed, thriller.

Black Oil Red Blood Diane Castle 9780974474229 Books Reviews

It's really hard to tell the good guys from the bad in this book. Most of the time it\s OK because there are the standard characters without whom there would be no book. Then there are the interesting ones. The one that you don't know might have an impact, and who knows for good or evil. That made the book for me.

Anyway this takes place in Texas, and they do things differently there. Join the team and see if you can stop big business from polluting or killing off the townsfolk.
the major thing I like about this book is that A portion of the proceeds benefits Gulf People Helping People, a fundraising initiative of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN), a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization to support people in financial hardship because of the BP 2010 Gulf Oil Disaster. Proceeds will go directly to those most in need including fishermen, oil spill clean-up workers and residents whose livelihoods and families are suffering from either poor health and/or dire economic hardships. This important effort will assist Gulf oil spill workers, residents, organizations and communities in making Louisiana and the Gulf Coast a safer place to live and work for us all. Greed and Secrets from Big Oil.
Diane Castle's "Black Oil, Red Blood" certainly knows its subject. The strange grasp that the oil industry has on the American and world economy is laid bare in this extremely well-researched book. Had this been a strict, legal expose of the oil industry, my recommend would be stronger. But ultimately, the thriller aspect of the novel seems a little rushed and the characters fall a bit flat. I really wanted to like Chloe, our heroine, but she never seems to be in control of her fate and the resolution of the crime comes by other hands. For its deft summary of the evils of the oil industry, I can give kudos. But as a crime thriller, "Black Oil, Red Blood" lacks focus.
This was an exciting, intreguing book. Reading some of the negative reviews, I wasn't sure that I would like it, but I took the plunge, bought it, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Although the subject matter was grim and there was a lot of bloodshed, the author lightened the story by a dash of humor. The poker party is a riotous example. One could see Edith Bunker trying to decorate to accomodate Archie's friends. The romance part was handled quite nicely with no throbbing male members or wiggley female feelings. Desire was handled adroitly and if it happened under extreme circumstances that was part of the fun. My biggest complaint was about the "heroine" who was supposed to be feisty and independant. Well... in order to prove her character she often stumbled into really stupid, immature behavior that made me want to slap her upside the head. Her "silent treatment" and her lack of trust for the hero really made the story more irritating than not. The author clearly knows the insides of Big Oil and her legal knowledge is perfect. Yes, I would buy another book by this writer. Grammar and spelling mistakes at a minimum or non-existant. That makes for a good read in and of itself!
Black Oil, Red Blood

I could not ask for a more effective reader's hook than the Prologue of "Black Oil, Red Blood." No possible way a reader could turn away from this novel after reading just the first few sentences-but even better, the entire Prologue rocks with excitement, danger, and potential fatality, with character, revelation, superb plot and setting. Amazingly, this is Author Castle's debut novel! It's almost too much to expect to find great writing, enjoyable characters (some of which inspired me to laugh out loud despite the serious circumstances), plotting whose torque is tightened till it almost squeaks (that means darn good plotting and layers upon layers of concealed secrets), a setting that is drawn with such attention to detail yet with subtle brushstrokes it makes this reviewer want to shout "Hallelujah!" What all this comes down to is do NOT miss this novel, Gentle Readers! I don't care what your position is on Big Oil, the economy, natural resources, or litigation-you simply must read this book.

Attorney Chloe Taylor hoes a hard row in the petroleum backwater of Kettle, Texas, a tiny town where Big Oil is King-and Queen-and Emperor. Kettle is a community where the most a person can look forward to is finding out which type of cancer will be one's demise, because if you work at PetroPlex, which fully half the town does, you're going to come down with some kind of terminal health crisis. Chloe's game is to win damages on wrongful death settlements, but she's playing David to an enormous Goliath-and PetroPlex doesn't want to pay out, and especially not to air its secrets. If Chloe isn't extremely careful-well, the next wrongful death just might be her own.
